TV REVIEW

TORCHWOOD: CHILDREN OF EARTH
Torchwood has been the dark brooding stepchild of Doctor Who since the beginning. With this special mini series (which, from what I've heard, is how all future seasons will run) that darkness has deepened to new and surprising depths. This show just got better and better with each episode. In episode 4 when you think the story is going to be wrapped up in a typical Doctor Who fashion, everything comes crashing down into a bleak chilling doom. The characters in Torchwood learn that they are not the Doctor and they cannot solve their problems in the same way. Their final decisions in episode 5 lead to life changing actions that will not be able to be undone. One of the best scenes is the governments of the world deciding what to do to solve their problem. Do they sacrifice the lives of millions to save billions? You are there in this and you can't just pass off judgement on these officials. As in the end you can't just pass judgement on Captain Jack for what he must do to save the human race. This was great television. Thought provoking and well written. In other word, everything British television tends to be and everything American television so often fails to achieve.
